Wren Ashwick has been married just over a year, and she is still learning what that means.
The rhythm is three weeks on the route, one week at the cottage. The letters between Mosshaven and Wren’s waystation desks are the connecting thread, except letters cannot carry tone, and one autumn morning a perfectly ordinary line of Rowan’s reads colder than it was meant.
By the time Wren has read it three times, she has invented a whole crisis.
Rowan was just tired. Wren is just learning. This is how partnerships are built: one small honest correction at a time.
Meanwhile, in Brackenford, a young person watches Wren sort the mail with the careful attention of someone working themselves up to a question. In Mosshaven, Rowan is planning something she will not yet call a festival. And somewhere on the Greymist road, Colm is at his door with the morning in front of him and an opinion about magpies he means to write down.
The route is the same. The shape of it is not. The first year of anything is, by definition, the year you find out what it actually looks like.
