W.J.M. Smith served as an officer, and retired as a major, in the British Army’s Royal Logistic Corps, the trade that keeps multinational operations moving and where coalition friction surfaces first.
He writes about leading through difference: making a unit that is not all one thing, national, cultural, joint, or multi-service, work and fight as one. It treats difference as an operational variable a competent leader can read and lead for effectiveness, not a mood to be managed or a value to be displayed. Command readiness, not ideology.
The writing is plain, dry, and non-preachy, drawn from inside the coalition seams rather than the seminar room. Where the evidence is solid, it leans on it and names it. Where it is thin, it says so.
His first book, Leading Through Difference: A Field Guide to Conflict Resolution and Cohesion in Multicultural Military Teams, was published on 20 August 2026 and is available now in ebook and paperback. A companion workbook is planned.
